Important Information About Child Behavior Modification
Behavior in general terms may be defined as a set pattern of response towards completely different environments. Although these responses are generally learnt from grown ups, these may be faulty due to positive reinforcements provided by adults unconsciously. When parents are looking forward to the strategies of child behavior modification they must understand the causes of some set behavioral patterns.
The first and foremost thing they need to understand is that behavior is learned by way of observation and experience. Kids who are in the age group of 2 to 5 begin copying the adult behavioral patterns. To understand this particular phenomenon in general terms we just need to be watchful about the way a young little girl would attempt to put her mom's lipstick or a younger boy would roam about in his father's boots or shoes. Aside from these little behavioral patterns, there are a lot of other subtle behavior patterns that the kids adopt from their dad and mom like the way they speak, aggressive behavior patterns etc. Which occasionally are unwanted. These when not rectified could later on cause behavioral issues.
Most of the times the parents resort to punishment as a tool for child behavior modification, they fail to understand that this isn't needed if they can rectify the unwanted habits of the little kid in its primary stages.
In order to modify set behavior patterns the parents first and foremost have to fully understand the difference between reacting to the condition and being proactive to the situation and learn how to discipline your child well. Reaction to the situation will include feelings of anger in the form of verbal sarcasm or hitting the child and even punishing the kid which might be too tough at that moment. This type of a response can actually leave a scar on the kid's mind forever. Being proactive to the situation would mean disapproving the kid's habits and helping him understand as to why it has been disapproved.
One other approach to modify child behavior problems is the method of reward and punishment which could be very helpful in modifying the child's behavior when used in the correct way. When the child tries to correct his behavior he needs to be given a positive reward which might be in the form of appreciation, some gift or perhaps a pat on the back. This sends the message to the child that a particular behavior is acceptable. While the undesirable behavior may be ignored, verbally not approved or maybe a little scolding can have the effect but this should follow immediately after the undesirable behavior. This will make the child understand that that very behavioral pattern is not really acceptable of him.
The dad and mom should also learn to distinguish between the child and his undesirable behavior pattern. While disapproving the unwanted behavior the dad and mom should be very cautious that they don't convey either verbally or in action that they do not love the little kid. This can actually damage the child's self-esteem and instead of improving it would make the child stubborn. Once the parents are able to easily communicate the disapproval of the behavior and their love for the little kid, they will be able to quickly accomplish the task of child behavior modification.
